Securing the 6G Cloud – Defending Against “Man-in-the-Middle” Attacks: PoC#4 in the MARE Project

As we move toward 6G networks, the infrastructure that powers our connectivity is undergoing a major transformation. Unlike older networks built on specialized hardware, 6G relies heavily on cloud-native technologies – using software and virtual servers to run network functions. This approach makes networks more flexible and efficient, but it also introduces new risks.

This is the focus of Proof of Concept 4 (PoC#4) within the MARE project, which investigates how to protect these virtualized environments from sophisticated attacks that attempt to intercept and manipulate communications.

The Threat: The "Man-in-the-Middle"

In a cloud-native 6G network, different parts of the system communicate constantly, sending data back and forth to manage calls, internet traffic and user data. A “Man-in-the-Middle” (MitM) attack occurs when a hacker positions themselves between these communicating parts.

Imagine a private conversation between two people where a spy is quietly listening in, and occasionally changes the words that are being exchanged. In a network, an attacker can use techniques like DNS Spoofing to trick a system into sending data to a malicious server instead of the correct one. This can allow them to steal sensitive information or disrupt services, all while the network operators think everything is running normally.

How PoC#4 helps to Fights Back

PoC#4 is designed to detect and neutralize these attacks by “connecting the dots” across the network. It uses a combination of advanced monitoring and automated response mechanisms to spot the subtle signs of a MitM attack.

The solution works using the following three key steps:

  • Continuous Monitoring: The system constantly collects data from the network infrastructure, watching traffic patterns and server logs for anything unusual.
  • Smart Detection: Using specialized detection tools, the system analyzes the data to spot anomalies – such as traffic being redirected to an unknown server or unexpected changes in communication patterns.
  • Automated Response: Once a threat is confirmed, the MARE Security Plane immediately triggers a response. This could involve blocking the malicious connection or re-routing traffic through safe pathways, stopping the attack before it causes damage.
